Freak: Scientist wants to grow a Neanderthal

George Church is a professor of genetics at Harvard School of Medicine. He also has raised eyebrows with his recent admission that he believes he can grow a Neanderthal from ancient DNA so long as he can find a surrogate mother to host the child.

Neanderthal are believed to be one of the ancestors of modern man and became extinct 33,000 years ago.

The professor has stated that he has already extracted enough DNA from fossil bones to reconstruct the long-lost species. As quoted in an interview with Der Spiegel, “Now I need an adventurous female human.”

Cloning a Neanderthal is of course illegal in most nations but either if jesting or if the professor is serious, it brings up new questions on the morality of this type of research and the need or want to resurrect long-extinct species.

Original Story: “I can create Neanderthal baby, I just need willing woman”
